Artificial Intelligence Policy

The policy establishes overarching guidelines for the responsible use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) by students and staff to maintain academic integrity and prevent plagiarism and cheating.
I. Core Commitments and Scope
Digital Literacy and Ethics: The District is committed to promoting digital literacy, which includes understanding AI capabilities, limitations, and ethical considerations. Users must be aware of potential biases in AI systems and take steps to ensure fair and equitable outcomes.
Purpose of AI Use: AI use should increase efficiency and enhance the learning experience without compromising the development of essential skills such as writing, problem-solving, and critical analysis. Students are encouraged to use AI to enhance their learning, but not at the expense of developing crucial skills.
Professional Judgment: Employees must not rely on AI for decisions that require professional judgment, particularly in areas such as student assessment, curriculum development, or administrative decision-making. Instructor review is essential and required.
Academic Integrity: Students and staff are expected to uphold ethical standards, including honesty and integrity in all aspects of learning. Academic dishonesty is strictly prohibited.
Emerging Technologies: The tenets of this policy are inclusive of emerging technologies in devices that provide wireless capabilities.
II. Discipline
Prohibited Action: Copying language, structure, art, or ideas using generative AI or other emerging technologies to develop work products that does not reflect the student's own independent thoughts, ideas, or abilities is prohibited and subject to appropriate discipline.
Plagiarism: Falsification of work product(s) using generative AI will be treated as plagiarism and subject to discipline under existing academic integrity and disciplinary policies.
III. Development of implementation protocol
The Superintendent of Schools shall direct the development of a protocol to facilitate this policy. The protocol should include guidance on the following:
Data privacy
Student use
Staff Use
Monitoring/enforcement
Training
