NONDISCRIMINATION ON THE BASIS OF HANDICAP / ACCESSIBILITY

It is the policy of the Smithfield Public Schools to make all programs and activities and all renovations, as well as all new construction in all schools and other buildings readily accessible to, and useful by, persons with disabilities. If any program or activity is located in an inaccessible location the Smithfield Public Schools upon receipt of a request from a person who wishes to participate in the program of activity, the School Department shall relocate that program or activity to an accessible location as expeditiously as possible.

The procedures for the Administration Building and the six school buildings operated by the Smithfield Public Schools are addressed in separate policy statements and procedures in this document. If an inaccessible program or activity can not be relocated within a reasonable time after the receipt of a request, the Smithfield Public Schools shall take necessary steps to insure that persons with disabilities may participate in, and benefit from the program activity. Such steps may include duplication of the program in an accessible location, provision of a similar program or activity through another school district or entity, or interim measures as authorized by Federal Law, the United States Department of Education, and the Office of Civil Rights. The School Department’s policy shall allow participation in the program or activity in its inaccessible location for a period of time until an accessible location can be found.

The School Department shall from time to time review this policy to determine that timely updates are adopted.

POLICY REGARDING PROGRAM ACCESSIBILITY

AT THE SMITHFIELD SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION BUILDING

The Smithfield Public Schools, recognizing that the second floor of the Administration Building is inaccessible to persons with disabilities, adopts the following policy:

All meetings and conferences at the Smithfield School Administration Building are available, without discrimination to the handicapped individuals as defined by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and/or Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Whenever a handicapped individual wishes to attend a School Committee meeting, conference or other type of meetings, that conference or meeting, if inaccessible, shall be relocated to an accessible area without delay.

Request for changing the location of the program to one which is accessible to persons with disabilities are to be directed to the Assistant Superintendent of Schools at 231-6606. The Assistant Superintendent under the direction of the Superintendent of Schools will relocate the program or activity to one of the four accessible schools in the district. The accessible schools are Smithfield High School, Gallagher Middle School, Anna McCabe School, and the Raymond C. LaPerche School. With the consent of the Town the program may also be relocated to the Senior Citizens Center which is also fully accessible.

AT ANNA MC CABE SCHOOL

All courses are student activities at Anna McCabe School are available, without discrimination, to individuals with disabilities as defined by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and/or Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Anna McCabe School is fully accessible.

POLICY REGARDING PROGRAM ACCESSIBILITY

AT RAYMOND C. LAPERCHE SCHOOL

All courses and student activities at Raymond C.LaPerche School are available, without discrimination, to individuals with disabilities as defined by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and/or Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Raymond C. LaPerche School is fully accessible.

POLICY REGARDING PROGRAM ACCESSIBILITY

AT WILLIAM WINSOR SCHOOL

All courses and student activities at William Winsor School are available, without discrimination, to handicapped individuals as defined by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and/or Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Whenever an individual with a disability selects a course or an activity for participation, that activity is inaccessible, shall be relocated to an accessible area without delay. In no instance shall the relocation of the activity be delayed beyond two school days. The principal is responsible for implementing the policy by relocating programs within the building. Requests for relocation are made to the principal of William Winsor School at 949-2059.

POLICY REGARDING PROGRAM ACCESSIBILITY

AT OLD COUNTY ROAD SCHOOL

All courses and student activities at Old County Road School are available, without discrimination, to handicapped individuals as defined by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and/or Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Whenever an individual with a disability selects a course or an activity for participation, that activity if inaccessible, shall be relocated to an accessible area without delay. In no instance shall the relocation of the activity be delayed beyond two school days. The principal is responsible for implementing the policy by relocating programs within the building. Requests for relocation are made to the principal of Old County Road School at 231-6613.

POLICY REGARDING PROGRAM ACCESSIBLITY

AT GALLAGHER MIDDLE SCHOOL

All courses and student activities at Gallagher Middle School are available, without discrimination, to handicapped individuals as defined by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and/or Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Whenever an individual with a disability selects a course or an activity for participation, that activity if inaccessible, shall be relocated to an accessible area without delay. In no instance shall the relocation of the activity be delayed beyond two school days. The principal is responsible for implementing the policy by relocating programs within the building. Requests for relocation are made to the principal of Gallagher Middle School at 949-2056.

POLICY REGARDING PROGRAM ACCESSIBILITY

AT SMITHFIELD HIGH SCHOOL

All courses and student activities at Smithfield High School are available, without discrimination to handicapped individuals as defined by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and/or Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Whenever an individual with a disability selects a course or activity for participation, that activity if inaccessible, shall be relocated to an accessible area without delay. In no instance shall the relocation of the activity be delayed beyond two school days. The principal of Smithfield High School is responsible for implementing this policy by relocating programs within the building. Requests for relocations are made to the principal of Smithfield High School at 949-2050.
