Protocol for Nursing Coverage on Field Trips
Smithfield Public Schools recognizes that while students are on field trips, there may be medications and treatments that must be provided by a school nurse or other medically trained equivalent. These include insulin injections, medication that must be measured or drawn up, or invasive medical procedures. When students requiring this specialized medical care attend a field trip, the trip should be chaperoned by a school nurse or other medically trained equivalent.
Parents may attend a field trip or designate another adult, in writing, to attend in their place in order to relieve the necessity for a licensed nurse. This designated person, assigned by the parent, may dispense medication(s) or perform specialized procedures. All medications or supplies required for the field trip must be dispensed from home, by the parent, and given directly to the designee.
